These are the top 10 cars, in my opinion. In no particular order.

1) Saab 900

Manual, available in Turbo, hatchback, fun to drive. Affordable.

2) Volvo 240 Wagon

aka, the Godfather.

3) Volkswagen Golf MKII

squeeeee; the best hot hatch ever.

4) Peugeot 205

The french Golf MKII variant, collect the whole set!

5) BMW E30

Obvious.

6) Volkswagen Thing

Who doesn't want one? Everyone wants one.

7) Jeep Grand Wagoneer

The only correct way to transport a large family. And that glorious wood paneling!

8) Pontiac Phoenix

First sold as a trim variant of the Pontiac Ventura, the Phoenix was available with rear-wheel drive and an optional 5.0-liter V8. Yesss, yesss, and that body styling is perfect.

9) Volkswagen Bus

Name a finer vehicle to cruise america in, nay, the world. You can't.

10) Citroen 2CV

A proper french car with unique and timeless styling.

I have owned at least one of each except for the 205. If you count the Citation V6 as a Phoenix. and that and the 2cv never hit the road. Got it covered

Wait a minute, what's the Golf MkII doing there? The MkI GTI is the one you want! The MkII GTI wasn't even a fast car anymore, let alone the lower trim-levels.

And, regarding that Peugeot: a 205 only is interesting if it's an XS/GT, Rallye or GTI.

As an aspiring academic, that is my exact goal. Although my dream involves rocking up to campus in a Citroën DS.

My father (a mechanical engineering professor) does this with his BX 16v, and actually uses Citroën hydropneumatic suspension as an exercise in one of his courses. While he was a Ph.D student, he restored (and then daily-drove) a Jaguar XK150 coupé. He's a pretty Jalop professor, if you ask me.

you see, I had a C5 Z06 but switched to C6. Right after I thought of the prices, which isn't too crazy for either, especially C5 Z06. I should of changed it to C5 *bumps forehead*

There's nothing wrong with a boggo 205, but I'm with you on the Golf Mark 1 being the one you want... That is, if you're after a Golf. The 'best hot hatch ever' is, now and forever, the illustrious 205 GT-lower-case-i.

Nothing wrong... Not interesting as I said. I just hardly consider an 205 1.0 with it's 4-speed and 45bhp as interesting. But I'm completely with you when it comes to that GTI. I'm sure that lower-case-i is just something the marketing guys at Peugeot recently came up with, the original GTI had a simple uppercase:

Even on it's registration-papers it's a GTI.

Interesting... I was sure it'd originally been 'i', in the marketing at least. I wonder why you so often see people - Peugeot enthusiasts, even - associating the lowercase 'GTi' badge with Peugeot, then? I know it didn't start with the 208, but that's the only car I can find that's had an actual lowercase 'i' on the badge.

I mean, I obsess over Peugeot GTis - well, pre-206, anyway - and I've always used it.

I'm not in the Peugeot enthusiasts' scene (just had the luck to have a 1.6 for a few months years ago) so I would not know that. The marketing guys obviously have done their job pretty good if that 'GTi' is common with you guys.
